Toronto High School – Access Ramp Integration

Snapshot:

  • Project – Toronto High School Access Ramp Integration

  • Timeline – Nov 2023 - Feb 2024

  • Budget – $134k

Toronto High School’s basketball courts and oval were split from the rest of the school by a graded embankment with fencing and stairs. This split-level arrangement posed a significant challenge as it did not provide equal access opportunities for people of all abilities. To solve this issue, UpBuild were engaged to build a compliant ramp to enable wheelchair accessibility thus provide equal access to all areas of the school. The works entailed the demolition of the existing embankment, installation of a new compliant concrete ramp, galvanised handrails/balustrading and sandstone blocks and an upgrade of the existing stairs. Due to the project being delivered over the Christmas holiday period, the team experienced severe supply constraints and labour shortages. However, despite these challenges, the team proved themselves to have superior industrial relations and sub-contractor management skills as the project was delivered as planned, on time and within budget. What resulted, was a fully compliant, aesthetic, low maintenance ramp which people of all abilities can use to access the sport courts. It has created an accessible, supportive, and caring space within the school, leading to equal opportunities and experiences for all students. The ability for UpBuild to deliver this project at such a quality standard within the tight timeframe provided, despite the multiple material delays, truly demonstrates what UpBuild is capable of.
